LOT #1: THE PETERSEN MUSEUM AUCTIONS A MILLION DOLLAR ALFA ROMEO GIULIA TZ1 RACE CAR
Lot #1 in the 2026 Cars & Bids Auction at Velocity Invitational is a rare and significant Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ1 race car, submitted by one of the world’s greatest automotive museums, The Petersen Automotive Museum.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ1 is where engineering ingenuity met Italian artistry at full speed. Developed in the early 1960s in collaboration with Zagato, the TZ1 introduced Alfa’s now-legendary “coda tronca” (Kamm tail) design, an aerodynamic breakthrough that helped these featherweight racers punch far above their class on circuits across Europe.
With fewer than 120 examples ever built and a racing pedigree that includes class wins at events like Le Mans and the Targa Florio, the TZ1 sits in that rare category of cars that are both historically important and viscerally alive.
Today, TZ1s trade hands in the $800,000 to $1.5 million range, depending on provenance and originality, placing them firmly in blue-chip collector territory. And one of the few ever built will be auctioned live on Cars & Bids at the 2026 Velocity Invitational. The winner of this auction won’t just take home automotive history; they’ll take home a car that can be raced at the Velocity Invitational and other significant historic motorsports events around the world.
